Key Stage 3
KS 3 Coordinator M Field
“The thumb pot was very exciting. I have managed to include more than one hole and used all the techniques the teacher showed us.” Y9 Pupil review
The Key stage 3 curriculum aims to give all pupils a spiral learning experience to provide challenge and expertise by developing basic skills and knowledge. The majority of pupils (58%) have an end of key stage level of 6 or higher and are therefore well equipped to achieve well at GCSE.
We begin with drawing technique and the use of colour in Y7 followed by experience of modelling in card. The spiral curriculum then allows pupils to revisit and build on these skills in y8 and y9 where higher levels of expectation and refined techniques give polished results. In addition new materials and methods such as batik, felt making, screen printing and clay are introduced in Y8 and Y9.
Our pupils tell us in review work that they really enjoy the practical activities such as Batik and that they learn lots about how to draw confidently and understand how to use colour mixing theory in their work.
