Key Stage 4 - Design and Technology
THE MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM – GCSE
Key Stage 4 courses are offered in the following areas :
In recent years such is the popularity of DT that an increasing number take 2 areas of study. At Tapton pupils may take GCSE courses in:
DT: Product design, emphasis on Graphic Products
DT: Food technology NVQ Catering
DT: Product design, emphasis on Resistant Materials technology
DT: Textiles technology
DT: Systems and control
DT: Engineering
Pupils will consolidate and build on the areas of theory which they have already started to cover in the lower school. During the first half of Year 10 they will improve their skills with “focussed tasks”
In June of Year 10 pupils start work on individual projects for the coursework component of their course. This accounts for 60% of their final exam marks. The finished artefact and the accompanying design folio has to be finished by early March in Year 11.
One written paper (1 ½ hours) accounts for the remaining 40% of exam marks.
A detailed revision programme is undertaken in the first half of the summer term in Y11 which involves tests and practice questions.
