AS and A Level History

 

Entry Requirements

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above
  • At least a grade C in History GCSE (or in English Language if no History at GCSE
  • A genuine interest in History
  • An enquiring mind.

Course Overview

Currently, students study the following

AS Level

  • Poverty and the British State , 1815-50
  • Civil Rights in the USA , 1945-68
  • Life in Hitler's Germany , 1933-39

A2 Level

  • The making of Modern Russia, 1856-1964
  • Mussolini and the Fascist State, 1924-39
  • Hitler and the Nazi state, 1933-9

Unit 1 – Poverty and the British State  

 
Using a range of sources, students learn about how 19 th Century social change affected the poor. Issues include attitudes to the poor, measures to deal with poverty including the workhouses and opposition to these measures. Students also visit the former Workhouse at Southwell in Nottinghamshire as part of this unit of study.

Unit 2 - Black Civil Rights in the USA , 1945-1968

 

This unit will focus on the movement towards equality by black Americans in the years after WWII. It includes a study of individuals like Martin Luther King and groups like the Black Panthers.

Unit 3 – Life In Hitler's Germany ,1933-39

Students examine Nazi ideology, including ideas such as the Master Race and consider how groups such as women, Jews and the young fared under Hitler's rule up until 1939.

Methods of Assessment

  • AS – Each unit will be examined at the end of Year 12
  • A2 – The Russia unit is assessed by course-work, completed in the 1 st term of Year 13
  • The other two A2 units are examined at the end of Year 13
