Key Stage 3 History - Summary of the Course
The History course is based on National Curriculum requirements and guidelines.
Students cover the following aspects;
Year 7
The Romans
In this Unit, students study a wide range of topics linked to the Romans including;
- The reasons for the Romans' rise to power,
- The Roman Army,
- Caesar and Augustus,
- Life in the Roman Empire .

The Medieval Realms (1000-1485)
This Unit focuses on Britain during the Middle Ages. As part of their study, all students are taken to Lincoln , where they visit the Norman castle and Cathedral. Topics include;
The Battle of Hastings
- How did the Normans take control?
- Life in a medieval village
- Medieval castles and cathedrals

Year 8
The Making of the UK , Britain from 1485-1750
This Unit focuses on the emergence of the United Kingdom during the early modern period. Topics include;
- The Tudor kings and queens
- Life for the rich and poor in Tudor England
- The Civil War and the rule of Cromwell
- The development of the United Kingdom

The Native Peoples of the Americas
This is a world study, allowing students to study an area of non-European History. Topics include;
- The Incas and their way of life
- The Inuit; life at the Pole
- The Plains Indians of North America

Year 9 The Industrial Revolution, Britain 1750-1900
A Unit which identifies and explores the key developments in the industrialisation of Great Britain . It links these national developments with Sheffield 's growth. This Unit includes a visit for all students to a cotton spinning mill at Styal, Manchester . Topics include;
- Working in the Mills
- The transport revolution; the coming of the railways
- Life in industrial towns
- Slavery; conditions and abolition
The Twentieth Century World
This final Key Stage-3 unit helps to put the world today in context, by examining the key events of the last 100 years. Topics include;
- The horror of the trenches; World War One
- Hitler's rise to power; the inter-War Years
- Global conflict; World War Two
- The USSR and the USA ; Cold War
