Key Stage 4 – GCSE History
Students complete four units over two years as part of their GCSE course. The Medicine and American West courses are examined whilst the History Around Us and Modern World Study are currently coursework units.

Medicine Through Time This unit develops a broad overview of the development of medicine through time, from prehistoric to the present day. Topics include;
Medicine in the ancient world; Egypt , Greece and Rome
Famous figures in medicine such as Florence Nightingale
Public health through the ages
The changing nature of surgery and the treatment of disease |

History Around Us This focuses on the development of the cutlery industry in Sheffield and includes a site visit to Shepherd Wheel. It addresses the following questions;
Why was steel so important to Sheffield ?
Why is Shepherd Wheel so important?
What would it have been like to work at Shepherd Wheel? |
China – a modern world study
China plays an ever more important role on the global stage and yet most students know little about it. This unit explores the history of China over the last 100 years and includes;
- China before the revolution
- The impact of the Communist revolution
- Chairman Mao; hero or a villain?

The American West, 1850-95
This is a depth study, focusing on a specific part of the United States over a relatively short period of time. It was a period of enormous change and this unit examines the causes and consequences of these changes.
- The native Americans and their way of life
- The cowboys; myth and reality
- The battle for the Plains
