Currently under construction

The role of the learning mentor team is to help students remove any barriers they may have to learning and help them work towards their full potential so they can enjoy school.

We do this by helping them deal with any problems which may be affecting their progress such as:

  • Attendance
  • Organisation
  • Homework
  • Concentration
  • Coursework
  • Effort
  • Behaviour
  • Revision techniques

We also help students cope with a range of emotional problems such as:

  • Friendships
  • Family separation
  • Self esteem
  • Self harming
  • Bereavement

Students who are returning to school after a long term absence, or who arrived after the start of the term are also given learning mentor support, if needed.

We support students in a range of ways;

  • We see students on a one to one basis, or in small groups
  • Support them in certain lessons
  • Offer homework club Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday lunchtimes in room 202 from 12.50 – 1.30
  • When there are a group of students who require similar support we look at offering a project that will benefit them all. We contact the parent/carer when a student has been referred to us to discuss the problem staff feel he/she is experiencing, and to gain permission to withdraw students from their lessons. The frequency with which we see each student depends on how the student is feeling. At a crisis time we may see the student daily, others we see weekly, some we see once a month. All this is discussed with parent/carers so we can work in partnership to support students to overcome any difficulties.

Very often we work with other agencies that the students may be involved with so we can all have a consistent approach and support the student to the best of our ability.

TRANSITION

The learning mentor teams are involved in the transition activities on offer to the students starting Tapton in the Autumn Term.

We also support identified students during their KS4/5 transition to either College/apprenticeship/6th Form.
