The Learning Support Department is led by Fiona Lawton, SENCO and includes specialist teachers, teaching assistants, and EAL (English as a second Language)
instructors. The Learning Support Department is based in 3 rooms on the ground floor.
The Department aims to help SEN pupils achieve their full potential both academically and emotionally.
We support students in a variety of ways
- Extraction from a language - to work on literacy (1 - 2 hours per week)
- Extraction from private reading (30 min per week - work on spelling/understanding of text)
- Short term intensive extraction - to work on literacy
- Paired reading with 6th formers - to work on reading
- Sessions during registration - to work on handwriting, keyboard skills, spelling and reading practice and one to one reading coaching
- Inclass support - to enable students to keep up to date and understand mainstream classwork
- Daily lunchtime clubs PE/Drama games or homework
- After school homework sessions
- Drop in sessions at breaks - immediate support, a short term interventon, our aim is to encourage independence
- Communication group ... we call upon outside specialists to help with this
- GCSE support option (2 hours per week) - mainly for those students who received literacy support in lower school. The time is spent working on material from other subjects
The Department has well established links with outside agencies such as the Educational Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapists, ADHD Specialists, the Hearing Impaired Service and the Sheffield Autism Team.
