READING
Developing good reading is vital for academic success, if your child lacks confidence there are several ways you can help:
- Read any printed material you see around you
- Read together simultaneously. If your child makes a mistake tell them the correct word, let them repeat it and move on. Remember to praise, praise and praise. Confidence and self belief are the best motivators
- Don't ask them to sound out words as this can lead to confusion, as not all words follow a strict phonic pattern
- Ensure that the book is not too difficult for them, remember success is vital
- Ask your child how these help us. In a non fiction book look at the index and talk about its purpose. Explain how it is used. In a fiction book ask them to guess the ending. How would they like it to end? Who was their favourite character? etc.
- New words can be learnt individually, put on cards or post-its and display around the house, a few a week is the idea. Play games such as 'Snap' and 'Pairs' to practice reading words found difficult or hesitated over.
