SPELLING
Spelling is a very fraught subject for children and parents, possibly because it is such a visible skill. However, with the use of computers it is something that can be managed in later life, and will certainly not drastically reduce exam grades. Neither is it an indication of intelligence, or reading ability. However, good spelling is valued by the students. Now we have put it in perspective here are a few strategies below that might help.
- Focus on no more than five words a week (some of these will need to be included in next week's list)
- Make it fun. Play games such as 'Boogle' Hangman' and 'Scrabble'. Look for words within words e.g. Father fat/her
- Encourage your child to check their work but make this a game e.g two words need correcting on that line. Can you find them? Possibly give a time limit
- If using a dictionary either give them the first three letters or check that they have these correct
- Consider the use of a spell checker
- Encourage your child not to worry about spelling when producing a first draft of written work otherwise it will limit the flow of ideas, and some students get into the habit of only using words they can spell, which results in a limited vocabulary by avoiding difficult words.
Keep all of these sessions short and above all fun. Progress will come but it may be slow.
