Science at Tapton is taught to all years and all abilities.
Pupils follow a Key Stage 3 course organised as modules and including preparation for KS3 SAT tests. Years 7 and 8 are usually taught 3 hours a week by the same teacher. Year 9 pupils usually have 3 lessons timetabled as biology, chemistry and physics. Pupils with special educational needs are given in-class support as necessary. Support lessons can sometimes be made available for pupils who need them
At KS4, most pupils take AQA GCSE combined science (also known as double science), though pupils can also choose to take 3 separate sciences at GCSE (also known as triple science). Both courses are modular, having 30% of the total marks tested in computer-marked tests during Y10. In post-16, we teach chemistry, biology and physics at AS and A2. Extra classes on maths for scientists have been made available.
The curriculum is enriched in various ways, so far we have arranged:
- ICT activities
- guest lecturers
- electrical safety talk from local power supplier
- zoo trip in science week
- lectures at the local universities
- visits by engineering employers
- and many more
