Drama/Art

Asian affairs

There was a buzz as we walked into T12 where Ms Bowes and her Year 9 students were on a tight schedule because they had to be ready for an enthralling drama production in just under an hour.

The production is supposed to show the lifecycle of the earth and how man has affected it. Their job was to create the creatures of the world such as peacocks and serpents out of wire and other intriguing materials The idea of integrating unusual materials and vivid colours creates an astonishing display which is sure to turn heads.

'The Tree'

The Year Nines split in to five groups of six to start practising the drama activity called The Tree. This play is made up of three parts: Drama, Art and Music. Later on they will all come together and perform the play. It is about a tree (hence the name), that is being cut down and people wanting to save it.

We watched as the Year Nine students read their script, and then used different drama techniques to present their work.

We got a student's opinion on the play:

“It is a very enjoyable activity, which is surprising seeing as it's a play about a tree.”

We also got Mr Moffatt's thoughts on the activity:

“This exercise is good for the students, as they can use all the Drama elements they have learnt so far. The play also has a message behind it, which is how humans are damaging the environment.”

The Year Nines seemed to be enjoying it, for everyone was joining in and participating. We hope the final performance goes well.

Preparation for 'The Tree '

Rangoli Art

A group of Year 9's were doing rangoli art which will come together for the background of the drama production of ‘The Tree' which was performed in front of the whole groups collaboration of their individual inspirations of rangoli art which has a nature theme inspired by the topics in the news about making the world eco-friendly.

11:00 – the team was well on their way to finishing on time for the production on a very tight time scale.

The theme for the rangoli art was rain forests and nature, they put distorted and changed pictures into shapes within a pattern, within that they were expressing their ideas about what is important in the world today.

Music

The theme of the music fitted well with the over all theme as they produced the music for the production using drums and other natural sounding instruments.

11:05 – the team had finished composing the music and were just rehearsing and perfecting their piece to make sure each team member were in sync with each other.

Art

They were making serpents and peacocks to fit in with the natural theme, these were used for added background or props. The designs were original as each one looks unique and unusual.

11:12 – art team were in a hurry to finish the serpents and peacocks but were well on their way to finishing for the production at 11:15.

Drama

Organised and well on their way just performing their final rehearsal; checking the performer were loud enough and knew their lines enough so didn't have to have the script in front of their faces.

11:15 – they were finished so they could arrange all the instruments and props ready for the performance.

Asian Affairs Performance

During the rehearsal a group of sixth formers read the play out to the class as a performance called “The Tree”

Then, the students got into groups and began rehearsing for their end performances, which they enjoyed doing.

The sixth formers and teachers helping gave the groups tips to help make their play better.

The groups also added actions to their performances to help give the audience a better understanding.

Mr. Bowes looked very pleased with the students while he was watching. Ms. Royles also enjoyed the performance.
