No 16 - 30th April 2008
Dear Parents, Staff, Governors and friends,
TAPTON U16 BOYS BADMINTON -
National Runners-Up
Many congratulations to the boys who have again finished in the first two in the country in the National Schools Badminton Championships - and to their coach Mrs Riley. See the article in the Sports Report below. The whole school is proud of you.
EXAMS
Good luck to all those, especially in Y9, Y11, Y12 and Y13 who are taking major public exams this term. Prepare yourself well, in good time and get plenty of sleep to keep your mind active. Don’t leave everything to the last minute or you won’t do your best. The trouble with public exams is that the results are very public too and others won’t be interested in your excuses. Make your own luck. Be prepared.
And , don’t forget, if you need Revision Guides, we have a range on sale in the School Shop. We have Key Stage 3 Science, Maths, English, GCSE Maths, History, Geography, Spanish, German, French, Textiles, Food Tech, Graphics, Resistant Materials, Engineering, and A2/AS Level books in Biology, Chemistry and Physics now in stock. Our supplies are very reasonably priced; many are less than half the price in normal shops. Please take advantage of this service we provide. There is also a good range of art supplies and stationery items on sale. The shop is open on Monday and Wednesday break and lunchtimes, and is on the first floor near the Art Department.
ARE YOU PLANNING SOMETHING EXCITING FOR THE SUMMER (OR IN YOUR GAP YEAR)
The PTA have a small fund which they use every year to support students who are taking part in educational or adventurous activities which are enterprising, in the sense that they’ve organised it themselves and they’re raising the money themselves (not just relying on parents). If interested write to the Chair of the PTA via Mr Storer at school, explaining what you want to do and how you’re going to go about it. We’ll then invite you in for a chat (after exams). Several people have already responded from last week. If you’re unsure and need some help, talk to Mr Storer. Please remember the fund is small. We can only fund a small part of your needs.

SPORTS REPORT
Badminton
Many congratulations to our U16 boys badminton team who finished runners-up in the National Schools Finals last week. The top 8 schools in England were competing and in our section Tapton boys dropped only 1 game out of 12. We were through to the finals against our old rivals, Thornden, from the South of England. It was a very closely fought final, with outstanding performances from our boys, but we lost narrowly. Tapton boys deserved to win, but second in England is an outstanding achievement. Since starting playing in Year 7 they have dominated Sheffield and Yorkshire badminton in their age group and can be very proud of their achievements, as I am. Team manager Mrs Riley.
Dance
Congratulations to the Tapton Dance Club on their victory at the Sheffield Schools Dance Competition. They beat some strong contenders for first place in the Key Stage 3 contest! Well done to all the team: Thank you also to Zoe and Sara, the 6th Form Sports Leaders, who arranged the choreography and worked hard with them.
Cheerleading
Congratulations also to the cheerleading group, who have also been working very hard at lunchtimes every week. They finished second in the competition. Well done.
Well done to both groups, who performed so professionally in front of an audience at Chaucer School dance studio. To finish first and second was brilliant.
Table Tennis
Congratulations to one of our Y10 students who has become sheffield schools' Table Tennis Champion after beating Wisewood school (6-11, 11-8,11-7). Additionally one of our year 7 students won the Year 7 competition. Well done to both boys . In our own school competition George became Y7 Champion after beating Silvan 11-5, 3-11 and 8-11.
Kieran became Year 8 champion after beating Rob in a close final 6-11, 11-6, 12-14.
Kieran became the outright winner of the Year 7-9 competition by once again beating Rob in the final Robert played tremendously but was just beaten 2 sets to 1. Well done to all players who took part.
Cricket
The cricket season is underway with teams in the Sheffield schools' leagues at Y7,8,9 and 10. Last year our current Y8s were Sheffield champions and our Y10s reached the final. Good luck this year!
Y7 play High Storrs(12th May), King Ecgbert (1st May), Silverdale(22nd May) and Abbeydale(10th June).
Y8 play King Ecgbert (6th May), Fir Vale (8th May) with Bradfield and Ecclesfield tbc.
Y9 play Bradfield, King Edwards( 6th May), Silverdale(19th June) and All Saints.
Y10 play Abbeydale(13th May), High Storrs(19th May) and Birley (5th June)
Hockey
All the girls have had a very successful season. Some results are still to be decided but so far:
U16 Runners-up in League and Cup U15 Runners-up in League U14 Runners-up in League and Cup
U13 Cup Winners (League to be decided next week) U12 League Runners-up, Cup Winners.
6 th form hockey proved to be very popular and at the start of the season we had matches every week. A variety of girls, boys and mixed matches were played against both local opponents and further. Many students are regular members of city clubs. Tapton U13’s went through to Wakefield as one of the teams representing S Yorks in the National Schools 7 a-side Tournament. The girls didn’t qualify for the finals but did very well – several gained representative honours: Well done everyone.
Ski 2009
There are just four places left for the 2009 ski course. And just to be ahead of the game – letters are now available for 2010! It would seem that most of the UK have their February half-term at the same time. We need to book this quickly – anyone interested should collect a letter from Mrs Hilton.
School Team Kit
Anyone who has not returned their kit to Mrs Hilton, please do so immediately
