Y7 Freshers’ Fair

Every year we host a Freshers’ Fair for our new year 7 students. This gives them the chance to see all the different opportunities available to them outside of our normal curriculum. With over 70 clubs running this year – there is something to suit everyone. Lisa Aldag-Caparrelli and Grace Jepson went along to find out more.

The event took place in the dining room during period 5 and later that night at 6.30 until 7.00 pm.  The Year 7s filtered in at staggered moments, as students wandered freely in and amongst the individual stalls each organised by 2 to 4 students in Year 8 and Year 9.  The name of the club, the duration and the place it runs was displayed clearly and flyers were handed out to the interested in Year 7, also there were sign-up sheets available.  There was great rivalry between all participating stalls to see who could promote and persuade Year 7s to sign-up to their club.

This event is really exciting and fun. It opens up a variety of unique clubs including: Languages club which is run by Miss Barr and Miss Watkins, War Games, Big Challenge, Astronomy, STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths), Art club led by Miss Newcombe, Book club who come together frequently each month to discuss books, the read along with Miss Law, Coding club led by Mr Al-Alawi, PE, Girls basketball and Music led by the staff Miss Page and Mrs Soulsby.

One year 7 commented ‘I’ve signed up for loads of clubs! I’m going to give things a go and try everything.'

All in all, the Year 7 students would highly recommend this event for next year’s freshers.  This is also a good way for older students to open up the eyes of the younger generation of students and to show that Tapton has a lot to offer students by opening them up to the wider community of Tapton.
