Film Studies at Tapton is a popular and relevant subject, developing students understanding of the medium of film, a dynamic field of the economy that will only continue to grow over the coming decades.

Tapton School offers Film studies at A-Level in Sixth Form. 

Reasons to choose Film Studies at Tapton

Tapton was the first Sixth Form in Sheffield to offer Film Studies and our A-level teaching team are experienced and passionate about their topics. You will be supported with up to date and relevant case studies that will deepen your understanding of the film that your familiar with and the film that you have yet to experience. You will learn the analytical and evaluative skills, along with practical experience, that will open up many opportunities in terms of your future career goals.

Exciting trips and visits. You will get the opportunity to work with Film Academics at Sheffield Hallam University to develop your screenwriting skills and to attend lectures and film screenings.

Key Stage 5 Curriculum Content

Film Studies A-Level is a linear course, culminating in 2 exams at the end of year 13, each lasting 2 hours, along with a NEA / Coursework component:

  • Paper 1 has 3 questions covering American and British Films 35%
  • Paper 2 has 4 questions covering Global Film, Documentary, Silent Cinema and Experimental Film 35%
  • Paper 3 is a Coursework Portfolio covering the production of a Short Film (either a screenplay or film).

Tapton School follows the WJEC Eduqas course.

What are the entry requirements?

5 in English Language or English Literature.

Year 12 (with the offer of an AS Level at the end of the year)

Students will study American Film (paper 1) and European Film (paper 2) elements of the course include:

  • Hollywood 1930-1990
  • Contemporary American independent film
  • British film
  • Non-English language European film

Year 13

Students will Varieties of Film and Filmmaking (Paper 1) and Global Filmmaking Perspectives (Paper 2) elements of the course include:

  • Hollywood 1930-1990
  • American film since 2005
  • British film since 1995
  • Global film
  • Documentary film
  • Film movements - Silent cinema
  • Film movements - Experimental film (1960-2000)
