The English department at Tapton School is enthusiastic and experienced, offering inspirational courses. The departments dedication and commitment to hard-work is key to enhancing the learning of each student.

Outstanding Teaching and Learning. We are a large department of sixteen full and part-time staff who all have an active interest in the wider world of literature, including reading and the theatre.

Varied and Exciting Curriculum. Including a Zoo Debate in Y7, an investigation into 'Pangolins, Plastics and Palm Oil' in Y8, and an exploration into dystopian genre in Y9.

Destinations. Tapton School offers English subjects at A-Level:

Students will gain enhanced language skills through reading, writing and spoken language activities. Students will study a novel, poetry and drama, together with a range of media and non-fiction texts.

Students will study towards their GCSE and sit 2 examinations at the end of the course. Tapton School follows the AQA specification.

Paper 1 

  •  Language and structural analysis of a literacy extract
  •  Creative writing, often using a picture stimulus.

Paper 2 

  • Synthesis of two unseen notification texts
  • Language analysis
  • Comparison 
  • Writing to argue a viewpoint.

  • Analysis of an extract from a Shakespeare Play and link this to the whole text
  • Analysis of an extract from a 19th Century Novel and link this to the whole text.

Paper 2

  • One question on a modern text
  • One question on a poem from the anthology and a comparison question 
  • An unseen poem and an unseen poetry comparison.
